School Based Traineeship - Certificate IV in Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care)

The Out of School Hours sector is a growth area in New South Wales, with numbers rising to nearly 1,000 before, after and vacation care centres. These centres offer care to children aged 5-12 years, specifically those enrolled in primary schools.

Network aims to improve and sustain the quality care offered to school age children by implementing and offering professional development to students and existing workers.

Network has developed learning materials around the nationally recognised qualification of CHC41208 Certificate IV in Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care).

What are School Based Traineeships?

School Based Traineeships are a work based training program that combines both work and structured learning through Years 11 and 12. Traineeships include both paid employment and a training program delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). In this region the RTO is Network of Community Activities.

School Based Traineeship participants are required to completed a set number of hours (approximately 400-500) in the workplace and attend all learning components.

Pathways:

  • Network has chosen a flexible option pathway for students, which will cover the Years 11 and 12 and an opportunity to complete work-placement between December and February after the HSC has finished if needed.

  • Duration = 1500 to 1600 logged hours of work and training completed within 26 months.

  • Start and finish – January or February of Year 11 to February following completion of the HSC examination.

  • Achieve the formal training:
    - Equivalent to one 4 hour day per school week for 7 terms.
    - Formal training is completed at the same time as the HSC.

  • Achieving work and flexible work based training.

Outcomes

Provided they meet all course requirements, students will leave Year 12 with their HSC and the Certificate IV. At present the traineeship pathway does not contribute to a UAI.

Successful completion of the Certificate IV will give students a direct pathway in the Diploma of Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care) and a possible pathway into the Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care).

Students will also be immediately employable by OOSH services once they have completed the course.

Payment:

Trainees will be paid under the National Training Wage Award, as identified by the Rates Summary.

Employment will be maintained and monitored by the Australian Training Company. Network will assist in sourcing appropriate services for the work-based learning.

What are the benefits for Trainees?

A traineeship combines both work and training. The Trainee will earn while they learn.
The Cert IV in Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care) is a nationally recognised qualification from the Community Services Training Package.
