Short Courses for Vacation Care Workers These short courses, of 1.5 hours duration each, were developed by Network of Community Activities for vacation care workers as part of a project ‘Innovative Options for Women in the West’, funded by the Office for Women, NSW Premier’s Department. The courses were designed for new workers and those with limited experience working with school-age children, particularly those workers in rural and isolated areas where centres often operate during the school vacations only and where there are few opportunities for training. The courses were conducted as part of a series of residential workshops for vacation care workers in the Walgett, Brewarrina and Bourke Shires. The topics cover some of the basic skills required for working in vacation care and were based on consultation with the women involved in the project, Waringaa Learning. Although developed for a specific project, these courses are suitable for any inexperienced vacation care workers, particularly those that work on a casual basis only. They could be conducted by vacation care coordinators, prior to the vacations as a short series of workshops or as a one-off course, depending on the needs of the centre and level of experience of the workers. Each course has details of recommended publications that are available from Network. In addition to these short courses Network has also developed an Accredited Course Building Blocks to Vacation Care. This consists of four 1.5 hour courses with additional assessment tasks.
