“It is in Australia’s interest I believe, to have young Aboriginal people with a very strong and very positive perception of what their Aboriginal identity means to them. Schools must play a part in getting Aboriginal children to reflect positively and accurately on their identity so that being Aboriginal is seen as something truly great. The reality is that if we do nothing, then the society we live in will somehow imply to them that they are somehow inferior… and the greatest tragedy is that many Indigenous young children will believe this.” Dr Chris Sarra.

Working with Aboriginal People and Communities DoCS have published "Working with Aboriginal People and Communities - A Practice Resource" which was produced by the Department's Aboriginal Services Branch. The publication is a worthy resource for all those working with families to read and familiarise themselves with. The Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC) is the national non government peak body in Australia representing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families. SNAICC operates from a membership base of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-based child care agencies, Multi-functional Aboriginal Children's Services, family support services, foster care agencies, link up and family reunification services, family group homes, community groups and voluntary associations, long day care child care services, pre schools, early childhood education services and services for young people at risk. In addition to these members SNAICC has a network and subscriber list of over 800 community groups, mostly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, but also significant numbers of non Indigenous community based services and individuals with an interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and children. OOSH services are encouraged to subscribe to their free Email alert to ensure you stay up to date with current issues. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reconciliation Australia Reconciliation Australia is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that was established in 2000 by the former Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation. They are the peak national organisation building and promoting reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians for the wellbeing of the nation. The website includes details on how to create your own reconcilliation action plan ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NAIDOC NAIDOC stands for the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee. Activities take place across Australia during NAIDOC Week which is the first full week of July. NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields. All Australians are encouraged to participate and OOSH services should look for opportunities to celebrate.
