MESSAGE FROM THE HON MAXINE McKEW MP, PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CHILD CARE

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood Education and Child Care.

I am honoured to have this role and, although there’s a great deal of work ahead of us, I’m delighted to be involved at this time of enormous change and exciting challenges.

We know that children learn more in the first five years of their life than at any other comparable period.

The Rudd Government understands and acknowledges the benefits of integrated high quality child care and early learning programs and that is why it has committed to lifting quality standards.

We will do this by developing and implementing a rigorous set of National Child Care Quality Standards and an A to E rating system that will apply to early learning and child care settings.

We believe these new standards will ensure the best child care experience for children and give parents access to better information to enable them to make an informed decision about the type of care they choose for their children.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many people and organisations who contributed to the previous government’s accreditation system.  Those contributions will provide a strong foundation for us to build on in the development of our new quality standards. I would also like to assure services that until the new standards are implemented the Government’s existing child care quality assurance systems will continue to operate.

On behalf of the Rudd Government, I’m looking forward to working with providers, parents and early childhood experts in developing this new quality assurance process and lifting standards for the benefit of Australian children and their parents.
